Over Development of the Trapezius Muscle

About ninety percent of my new clients have over-developed traps. This naturally occurs over a period of time from incorrect movement patterns, bad posture and bad habits. Pilates instructors are constantly correcting their clients by asking them to pull down their shoulders and engage the bigger muscle groups in the back.  One such muscle is the latissimus dorsi muscle or "lats".  A popular exercise that help retrain the correct muscles is called pull straps on the reformer.  Apparatus such as the pedi pole and magic circle also help to teach this concept.

Getting the facts right

I am always asked the question, "Can I lose weight doing Pilates?"  The answer is yes. The Pilates system is meant to be taught as one exercise transitions into the next.  Instructors teach the names of the exercises to their clients so that there in no need for verbal explanation and there is flow.  Once proper technique is taught at the advanced level Pilates becomes cardiovascular.  At this level you will watch your inches fall away!
